The goal is to work together to assess and improve water quality in urban streams, while protecting human health in neighboring communities.<\/p>\n\n<p>Residentes preocupados de todos los tramos de la cuenca del r\u00edo Chattahoochee traen muestras de agua de m\u00e1s de 200 estaciones de arroyos a los laboratorios de CRK, como parte de NWW. UU. Esta iniciativa est\u00e1 impulsada por nuestra creciente preocupaci\u00f3n de que los niveles bajos de agua en el verano, que pueden resultar en niveles bajos de ox\u00edgeno disuelto, puedan estar da\u00f1ando el ecosistema del r\u00edo y la calidad del agua, adem\u00e1s de afectar la salud de las comunidades y la vida silvestre que dependen de \u00e9l.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div><div id=\"crk_section_block_8f944b99a58a67dec3a384395d98899c\" class=\"crk-section color-cream-bg\">\r\n    <div class=\"crk-section-container pos-rel max-width\">\r\n        \n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lake Nutrient Monitoring<\/h2>\n\n<p>Nitrogen\u00a0and phosphorus\u00a0are nutrients that are essential\u00a0in healthy\u00a0freshwater lakes and\u00a0rivers, but\u00a0can cause major water quality problems when they are in excess\u00a0from\u00a0human\u00a0sources.\u00a0Some examples are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Runoff from agricultural and industrial areas<\/li>\n\n<li>Discharges from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities<\/li>\n\n<li>Leachate from septic\u00a0systems<\/li>\n\n<li>Runoff from lawn fertilizers, and more\u2026<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p>Higher concentrations of nutrients in\u00a0lakes\u00a0can drive excessive algae growth, which\u00a0can\u00a0impact\u00a0drinking water supplies, result in harmful algal blooms\u00a0(HABs), and harm aquatic\u00a0life.<\/p>\n\n<p>CRK conducts monthly monitoring of nutrient levels in Lake Lanier, West Point Lake, and Lake Walter F. George (Lake Eufaula) between April and October. We are deploying the devices (aka CASSIs) in streams and the river to detect conductivity, temperature and turbidity. Every 15 minutes, the CASSIs send the data over a cellular network to a web data portal that we monitor remotely.<\/p>\n\n<p>We use the data to track urban water quality issues such as illicit discharges, stormwater discharge from construction projects, sewer overflows and to inform recreational river users about water quality on the Chattahoochee River.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-button alignleft\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-cream-color has-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/monitormywatershed.org\/browse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Explore los datos de CASSI<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div><div id=\"crk_section_block_8f944b99a58a67dec3a384395d98899c\" class=\"crk-section color-cream-bg\">\r\n    <div class=\"crk-section-container pos-rel max-width\">\r\n        \n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PFAS<\/h2>\n\n<p>Also known as &#8220;forever chemicals,&#8221; PFAS (per- and\u00a0polyfluoroalkyl\u00a0substances) are a large group of chemicals that are resistant to heat, water, and oil. PFASs, including PFOA and PFOS, have been used to make carpets, clothing, fabrics for furniture, paper packaging for food, and other materials such as cookware, which are resistant to water, grease, or stains. They are also used for firefighting at airfields and in several industrial processes.<\/p>\n\n<p>Because these chemicals have been used in many consumer products and they break down very slowly in the environment, most humans and ecosystems have been exposed to them at some point. CRK is monitoring surface water near industrial areas and municipal wastewater discharges to understand PFAS hotspots in the Chattahoochee watershed.
