Durante nuestro River Relay de un a\u00f1o de duraci\u00f3n, los miembros del personal de CRK que atravesaban el r\u00edo desde su nacimiento hasta su t\u00e9rmino se encontraron con lugares que otros usuarios del r\u00edo no suelen ver. Cuando nuestro equipo de CRK se detuvo en una rampa para botes en la presa Walter F. George en diciembre de 2019, un letrero amarillo dec\u00eda "Precauci\u00f3n: los caimanes pueden estar presentes". Esta no es una vista habitual en los parques y rampas para botes que bordean las secciones superior y media de Chattahoochee, donde nuestro trabajo de campo ha sido m\u00e1s activo durante los \u00faltimos 26 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

El caim\u00e1n americano (Alligator mississippiensis) vive en los pantanos, marismas, r\u00edos, estanques y lagos al sur de la l\u00ednea de ca\u00edda de Georgia, que es el l\u00edmite geol\u00f3gico que corre hacia el noreste a trav\u00e9s de Georgia desde Columbus hasta Augusta.<\/p>\n

Si bien las historias de avistamientos de caimanes en la parte superior y media de Chattahoochee circulan ocasionalmente, es probable que su presencia se deba a la reubicaci\u00f3n de los humanos. Los caimanes solo se reproducir\u00e1n en las aguas m\u00e1s c\u00e1lidas de Chattahoochee, r\u00edo abajo de Columbus.<\/p>\n

Diminutos cuando nacen (aproximadamente de 8 a 10 pulgadas de largo), los caimanes completamente desarrollados pueden medir entre 10 y 16 pies de largo. Como adultos, son depredadores importantes en los ecosistemas que habitan y comer\u00e1n casi cualquier cosa que puedan atrapar, incluidos peces, tortugas, serpientes, aves acu\u00e1ticas, mapaches, castores y nutrias. Dada la oportunidad, tambi\u00e9n se sabe que comen mascotas y peque\u00f1os animales de granja como cabras y cerdos.<\/p>\n

Cuando el clima se vuelve fr\u00edo, los caimanes se adaptan cavando un "agujero de caim\u00e1n" a lo largo de una v\u00eda fluvial y quedan inactivos. Aunque el personal de CRK no pudo ver ninguna de estas notables criaturas durante nuestro viaje, sigue siendo emocionante pensar en estos reptiles gigantes que viven entre nosotros mientras pasamos m\u00e1s tiempo r\u00edo abajo.<\/p>\n
