BacteriAlert es un programa \u00fanico de monitoreo de bacterias en tiempo real operado como una asociaci\u00f3n entre CRK, el Servicio Geol\u00f3gico de EE. UU. (USGS) y el Servicio de Parques Nacionales (NPS). Juntos, hemos estado recopilando datos del r\u00edo Chattahoochee durante los \u00faltimos 20 a\u00f1os. En ese tiempo, los investigadores han notado un patr\u00f3n confiable en los datos: cuando llueve, las aguas pluviales arrastran los contaminantes al r\u00edo y aumentan los niveles de bacterias. Estos picos de bacterias pueden poner a las personas que se recrean en el r\u00edo en riesgo de enfermarse.<\/p>\n

Las pruebas tradicionales para los niveles de bacterias tienen un tiempo de respuesta de 18 a 24 horas, lo que significa que las pruebas solo se pueden procesar en el tiempo suficiente para indicar que no deber\u00eda haber estado nadando en el agua ayer si los resultados fueron altos. Dentro del \u00c1rea Recreativa Nacional del R\u00edo Chattahoochee (CRNRA), los resultados del d\u00eda anterior no fueron suficientes para proteger a los 1,3 millones de personas que participan en actividades recreativas acu\u00e1ticas cada a\u00f1o. Es por eso que se cre\u00f3 el programa BacteriAlert para proporcionar avisos p\u00fablicos en tiempo real dentro de los 15 minutos siempre que las condiciones indiquen que el agua no es segura para nadar.<\/p>\n

Los medidores est\u00e1n instalados en tres ubicaciones dentro del CRNRA de 48 millas de largo: Medlock Bridge, Paces Mill y Powers Ferry.
