{"id":25962,"date":"2026-02-19T09:20:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T14:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/?p=25962"},"modified":"2026-03-12T13:12:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T17:12:13","slug":"georgia-to-launch-proactive-multi-year-plan-to-protect-west-point-lake-from-rising-algae-levels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/es\/blog\/georgia-to-launch-proactive-multi-year-plan-to-protect-west-point-lake-from-rising-algae-levels\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia to launch proactive, multi-year plan to protect West Point Lake from rising algae levels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated March 12, 2026<\/em> | The state of Georgia is\u00a0initiating\u00a0a\u00a0multi-year\u00a0plan\u00a0to help\u00a0West\u00a0Point Lake after the lake exceeded average annual chlorophyll-a\u00a0standards\u202ftwice\u202fin a five-year period.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chlorophyll-a is a pigment in algae that scientists\u202fmeasure\u202fto\u202fquantify\u202fand\u202fassess\u202fthe health\u202fof\u202flakes over time.\u202fAlgae are fed by\u202fthe\u202fnutrients\u202fphosphorus&nbsp;and nitrogen, which enter lakes\u202ffrom human sources such as\u202fwastewater discharges,\u202fleaking sewer lines and septic tanks, lawn fertilizers,\u202fand\u202fagricultural\u202fand urban runoff.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to control nutrients at the source because excess algae growth can harm recreational water quality, cause&nbsp;taste&nbsp;and odor issues in treated drinking water, and decrease the oxygen levels that fish and other aquatic life need to survive.&nbsp;Excess nutrients can contribute to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/es\/our-work\/habs\/\">Floraciones de algas nocivas<\/a>&nbsp;(HABs) and&nbsp;can even threaten the health of humans and animals who come into contact with the water.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023 and 2024, West Point Lake experienced its highest levels of chlorophyll-a\u202fin over a decade, surpassing&nbsp;EPD&nbsp;standards set in 2013.&nbsp;As a result, the Georgia Environmental Protection&nbsp;Division (EPD) added West Point Lake to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/epd.georgia.gov\/https%3A\/epd.georgia.gov\/assessment\/water-quality-georgia?utm_campaign=&amp;utm_content=&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery&amp;utm_term=#toc-georgia-s-draft-2026-305-b-303-d-list-documents\">Georgia&#8217;s 2026\u202fDraft\u202f303(d) list<\/a>,&nbsp;which will&nbsp;trigger&nbsp;a\u202fcleanup plan called a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/epd.georgia.gov\/watershed-protection-branch\/watershed-planning-and-monitoring-program\/total-maximum-daily-loadings\">Total Maximum Daily Load<\/a>&nbsp;(TMDL).\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EPD\u202fstaff and stakeholders\u202fwill\u202fcreate a TMDL that\u202fdetermines\u202fhow to reduce upstream sources of phosphorus and nitrogen, such as&nbsp;issuing&nbsp;stricter permits for wastewater treatment plants and\u202faddressing\u202fagricultural\u202fand urban stormwater&nbsp;runoff.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChattahoochee Riverkeeper&nbsp;supports the creation of\u202fa\u202fTMDL to\u202fget ahead of this issue and&nbsp;protect\u202fWest Point Lake\u202fnow and&nbsp;for future generations,\u201d said Jason Ulseth,&nbsp;Riverkeeper&nbsp;and Executive Director.\u202f\u201cWe believe the TMDL is the best option for the local community because&nbsp;it&nbsp;requires&nbsp;Georgia, EPD, and stakeholders\u202fto work together&nbsp;to&nbsp;develop a&nbsp;plan&nbsp;and implement&nbsp;changes that&nbsp;will ultimately protect water quality and preserve the health of the&nbsp;lake.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EPD held a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/epd.georgia.gov\/https%3A\/epd.georgia.gov\/assessment\/water-quality-georgia?utm_campaign=&amp;utm_content=&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery&amp;utm_term=#toc-georgia-s-draft-2026-305-b-303-d-list-documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public meeting<\/a>&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;the&nbsp;Draft 303(d) list&nbsp;of waters on Tuesday, March 10,&nbsp;2026. Read the comments CRK submitted to EPD&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/CRK-comments_2026Draft-305b303dlist_3.11.2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aqu\u00ed<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK) began\u202fmonitoring\u202fchlorophyll-a levels on West Point Lake.\u202fThanks to ongoing support from the City of LaGrange and individual donors,\u202fCRK staff collect\u202fmonthly\u202fsamples\u202fat three stations\u202fon West Point Lake\u202fbetween April and October every year\u202fin accordance with\u202fa Sampling and Quality Assurance Plan approved by EPD.\u202fAt the end of\u202fthe season,\u202fdata collected by CRK is averaged with data collected by EPD.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"565\" src=\"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WPL-data-1024x565.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WPL-data-1024x565.png 1024w, https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WPL-data-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WPL-data-768x423.png 768w, https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WPL-data-18x10.png 18w, https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WPL-data.png 1052w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>CRK and EPD seasonal chlorophyll-a data averaged together.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of its location on the Chattahoochee River downstream of Metro Atlanta,\u202fWest Point Lake\u202fis vulnerable to pollutants from many sources, including muddy sediment from development, fertilizers from lawns, leaking sewer pipes, and septic systems in disrepair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CRK worked throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s to make the City of Atlanta overhaul its failing sewer system. After Atlanta made improvements to their sewer system, water quality downstream improved significantly. West Point\u202fLake\u202fwater\u202fquality data collected by EPD in 1986 had a seasonal chlorophyll-a\u202faverage of 44\u202fug\/L. When CRK started\u202fmonitoring in 2014, the seasonal average was 12 ug\/L.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Averages slowly increased each successive\u202fyear,\u202fbut algae levels made a significant jump\u202fin 2023 and 2024. For example, at the City of LaGrange water intake\u202fstation on West Point Lake, chlorophyll-a levels increased from 19 ug\/L\u202fin 2022\u202fto almost 28 ug\/L\u202fin 2023. The standard set by EPD for that\u202fstation is 24 ug\/L. In 2025, chlorophyll-a levels registered below the EPD standard at\u202f20 ug\/L.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CRK also\u202fmonitors\u202fwater quality in West Point Lake through our volunteer-based\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/es\/our-work\/water-quality-monitoring\/\">Vigilancia del Agua del Vecindario<\/a>\u202fprogram.\u202fWater samples are collected every week and promptly analyzed for turbidity, conductivity, and\u202fE. coli\u202fbacteria.\u202fDuring the summer recreation season, we publish a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/es\/swim-guide\/\">Gu\u00eda de nataci\u00f3n<\/a>\u202f\u2013 a series of maps with red or green lights to help\u202fthe public\u202fdecide if it is safe for primary contact recreation at popular swimming spots on the Chattahoochee River.\u202fSites on West Point Lake\u202fcommonly\u202freceive a green light for swimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CRK is in communication with EPD as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers West Point Project, Troup County, City of\u202fLaGrange,\u202fand others.
