{"id":26319,"date":"2026-06-24T15:25:37","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T19:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/?p=26319"},"modified":"2026-06-24T16:10:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T20:10:38","slug":"investigation-of-atlanta-fish-kill-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/es\/blog\/investigation-of-atlanta-fish-kill-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"Investigation of Atlanta fish kill continues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>June 24, 2026 | Chattahoochee Riverkeeper\u00a0(CRK)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/press-releases\/report-attributes-45000-fish-killed-in-chattahoochee-river-to-combined-sewer-overflow\/\">continues to investigate<\/a> the unprecedented May 20-22, 2026 fish kill on the\u00a0Chattahoochee\u00a0River directly downstream of Peachtree Creek\u00a0in Atlanta, Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a routine patrol of the river on Friday, May 22,\u00a0CRK\u2019s\u00a0Riverkeeper\u00a0and executive director Jason Ulseth discovered thousands of dead fish in the river downstream of Peachtree Creek.\u00a0He\u00a0observed\u00a0multiple sizes and species\u00a0of fish\u00a0caught\u00a0in\u00a0downed trees and wood along the banks and floating down the center of the river.\u00a0Black\u00a0organic material coated the banks and\u00a0was suspended in the water column.\u00a0We\u00a0immediately\u00a0contacted the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management\u00a0(DWM), who joined us\u00a0on\u00a0our\u00a0patrol boat to\u00a0observe\u00a0river conditions.\u00a0In the following days and weeks,\u00a0CRK\u00a0has\u00a0been coordinating\u00a0with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources\u00a0Wildlife\u00a0Resources\u00a0Division\u00a0(WRD),\u00a0Georgia Environmental Protection Division\u00a0(EPD),\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Environmental Protection Agency\u00a0(EPA), and DWM to uncover what caused the fish kill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Let&#039;s Chatt: Atlanta Fish Kill\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NcCkluGzymA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Recording of a free, informational webinar hosted by CRK on June 4, 2026 in response to the fish kill.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During rush hour on Wednesday, May 20, the metropolitan Atlanta region \u2013 mostly&nbsp;the areas around midtown and downtown Atlanta&nbsp;\u2013 experienced a reported three inches of rainfall in&nbsp;one&nbsp;hour.&nbsp;The&nbsp;Downtown&nbsp;Connector (I-75\/85) flooded,&nbsp;stranding cars.&nbsp;Polluted runoff,&nbsp;also called stormwater, flowed into Peachtree Creek&nbsp;and the city\u2019s combined sewer system.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time, CRK believes low flows in the river due to drought;\u00a0massive, polluted stormwater flows from Peachtree Creek;\u00a0an overflow\u00a0of\u00a0sewage and stormwater\u00a0from the City of Atlanta\u2019s combined sewer system\u00a0into Peachtree Creek;\u00a0and additional treated discharges from wastewater facilities into the Chattahoochee River created the conditions for the fish kill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:62px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\r\n<div id=\"crk_section_block_c630d6d21c6a011b69e3e130dde8b373\" class=\"crk-section color-cream-bg\">\r\n    <div class=\"crk-section-container pos-rel max-width\">\r\n        \n\r\n    <div class=\"crk-testimonial wp-block-columns\">\r\n         \r\n            <div class=\"wp-block-column has-text-align-center is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"flex-basis: 33.33%\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/fish-kill-jason-chris-scaled.jpg\" class=\"image-mask\" \/>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n                <div class=\"wp-block-column has-text-align-center is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"flex-basis: 66.66%\">\r\n            <div class=\"quote-mark\"><\/div>\r\n            <!-- wp:paragraph {\"placeholder\":\"Write testimonial...\"} -->\n<p>The City of Atlanta\u2019s sewer overflow system is designed\u00a0to handle intense storms, so we know that operational failures played a role\u00a0in the West Area Tunnel overflow. This emergency overflow of untreated water mixed with the polluted stormwater in Peachtree Creek and then entered the Chattahoochee River. The City of Atlanta has&nbsp;indicated&nbsp;that they did not follow all their standard operating procedures for management of the combined sewer overflow&nbsp;system.&nbsp;Due&nbsp;to drought conditions, the Chattahoochee River was flowing at&nbsp;a very low&nbsp;level \u2013&nbsp;approximately&nbsp;750 cubic feet&nbsp;per second. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers \u2013 the entity responsible for managing the river\u2019s flow \u2013 was&nbsp;only&nbsp;maintaining&nbsp;minimum flows at this critical waterway junction due to the drought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Significant&nbsp;stormwater flows in Peachtree Creek&nbsp;carried&nbsp;high levels&nbsp;of pollutants. After hitting pavement on a&nbsp;warm day, the stormwater temperatures would have been higher than the creek\u2019s typical temperature. Additionally, due to a lack of rain, the stormwater flows carried a high load of&nbsp;additional&nbsp;pollutants&nbsp;that had&nbsp;built-up&nbsp;on the roads&nbsp;into Peachtree Creek and the Chattahoochee River.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-263191\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">How did the fish die?<\/h2><div id=\"ac-263191\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) leads us to believe that the fish died on May 20.\u00a0USGS\u00a0maintains a\u00a0monitoring gauge\u00a019\u00a0miles downstream\u00a0of Peachtree Creek\u00a0at Fairburn Road.,\u00a0and the data shows that dissolved oxygen\u00a0dropped below 2 mg\/L\u00a0in the hours after the storm.\u00a0Dissolved\u00a0oxygen levels in the river\u00a0at the Fairburn\u00a0Road are typically\u00a0between\u00a07-9 mg\/L.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fish and other aquatic\u00a0life\u00a0need oxygen from the water to survive.\u00a0Warmer water holds less oxygen.\u00a0After hitting pavement on a warm day, the stormwater temperatures\u00a0on May 20\u00a0would have been higher than the\u00a0river\u2019s\u00a0typical temperature. Details from that meeting and a review of permits, city operating procedures,\u00a0flow\u00a0and rain gauges, CRK\u00a0hotline reports, and other evidence\u00a0indicate\u00a0that a combination of factors contributed to this event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management\u00a0(DWM)<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Evaluating internal operations\u00a0and\u00a0conducting\u00a0water quality and sediment testing.\u00a0The city\u00a0continues to\u00a0submit\u00a0reports\u00a0and\u00a0assessments\u00a0to EPD.\u00a0DWM\u00a0has\u00a0publicly\u00a0committed\u00a0to\u00a0hiring\u00a0a third-party\u00a0engineering\u00a0firm\u00a0to\u00a0conduct a\u00a0thorough\u00a0review of the event\u00a0and make any necessary changes to operating\u00a0procedures\u00a0and implement any technological upgrades to ensure a fish kill event like this one does not happen again.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR)<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0After collecting\u00a0data on water quality\u00a0along with the\u00a0number, species,\u00a0and sizes\u00a0of dead fish on May 22, 2026,\u00a0the\u00a0agency\u2019s Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) investigators\u00a0concluded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chattahoochee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/FISHKILL-INVESTIGATION-CHATTAHOOCHEE-RIVER-Fulton_Cobb_Douglas_05_22_26_final_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>in their report<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that\u00a044, 509 fish were killed in a\u00a016-mile\u00a0stretch\u00a0of\u00a0the river\u00a0and placed a value on the fish killed:\u00a0$838,603.96.\u00a0DNR concluded: \u201cGiven the [City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management\u2019s] statement, eyewitness account, presence of dead fish within the affected river reach, the data collected at the Fairburn USGS gauge, and WRD field staff observations during the investigation, WRD Fisheries can reasonably conclude that the fish kill was the result of the development of hypoxic conditions in the Chattahoochee River following the\u00a0[West Area Tunnel\u2019s]\u00a0wastewater discharge on 5\/20\/26.\u201d\u00a0To CRK\u2019s knowledge, this is the\u00a0biggest fish kill in Georgia since\u00a0the 2011 Ogeechee River incident when\u00a038,000\u00a0fish over 77 miles with $125,000\u00a0value\u00a0died.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CRK anticipates that&nbsp;Georgia EPD will&nbsp;fine&nbsp;the City of&nbsp;Atlanta for&nbsp;the&nbsp;value&nbsp;of&nbsp;the dead fish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">U.S.\u00a0Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) <\/span>\u2013 Oversees the City of Atlanta Consent Decree for their Combined Sewer System.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-263194\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">What do drought and climate change have to do with this event?<\/h2><div id=\"ac-263194\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>At the time of the fish kill, the Southeast region had&nbsp;been in a drought with minimal rainfall for months. Streams and the Chattahoochee River have been flowing at near-historical lows. On April 27, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division announced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/epd.georgia.gov\/press-releases\/2026-04-27\/level-1-drought-declared\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Drought Response Level 1<\/a>, the first time&nbsp;since 2017.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This event&nbsp;demonstrates&nbsp;that warmer temperatures&nbsp;and&nbsp;changing rainfall patterns&nbsp;due to&nbsp;climate change&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;combined with&nbsp;high pollutant loads, overwhelmed infrastructure, and inadequate flows&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;stressed the river to the point of breaking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-263195\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Did this event\u00a0impact\u00a0the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area?<\/h2><div id=\"ac-263195\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>This event did not&nbsp;occur within&nbsp;the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.&nbsp;Subsequent&nbsp;rainfall events and non-point source pollution predictably elevated E. coli levels in the river&nbsp;unrelated to the fish kill. Always exercise caution when&nbsp;coming into contact with&nbsp;the river for&nbsp;48 hours&nbsp;after it rains and the river is high and muddy. You can view real-time bacteria estimates online at <a href=\"https:\/\/ga.water.usgs.gov\/bacteria\/\">bacterialert.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-263196\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Did this event\u00a0impact\u00a0West Point Lake?<\/h2><div id=\"ac-263196\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Since May 22, CRK only&nbsp;observed&nbsp;dead fish on the stretch of river from Peachtree Creek in Atlanta to the city of Chattahoochee Hills. We did not&nbsp;observe&nbsp;any impacts&nbsp;to&nbsp;water quality, fish, or other wildlife in West Point Lake or further downstream in Columbus.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last two years, CRK has&nbsp;documented&nbsp;multiple events that have compromised public and environmental health and safety in the Chattahoochee River below Peachtree Creek.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The infrastructure failures of Fulton County\u2019s Big Creek Water Reclamation Facility (2023) and the City of Atlanta\u2019s R.M. Clayton Water Reclamation Center (2024) placed significant stress on the Chattahoochee River. CRK&nbsp;witnessed&nbsp;and reported water quality violations in both cases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, CRK has consistently&nbsp;advocated for&nbsp;higher river flow levels to ensure public health and safety downstream.
