Rivers & Land Opening Reception

Event Details

Rivers & Land is an exhibit focused on waterways that flow through the Southern landscape, including the Chattahoochee River. Highlights include art quilts by Cathy Fussell, paintings by Fred C. Fussell, and photographs by Henry M. Jacobs.

The exhibit will run from July 14 through August 26 and is presented by the Cochran Gallery and Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. A portion of the proceeds from sales will support CRK efforts in the Middle Chattahoochee region.

About the artists:

Cathy Fussell has been a practicing fiber artist for more than 50 years. She has been sewing and working with textiles since her early childhood in Buena Vista, Georgia, her hometown. Today, she maintains a studio in Columbus, Georgia, where she specializes in making art quilts and related works in fabric. Cathy’s art is held in a number of public collections. Included among them are two major works in the The Fulton County (GA) Public Arts Collection; six large pieces in the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Koch Collection in New York, New York; and two pieces in the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery. Additional examples of her artwork have been exhibited in numerous juried and curated art exhibitions around the South and beyond, and her work is held in dozens of private collections around the nation and abroad.

Fred C. Fussell is an artist, curator, photographer, and writer whose work focuses on the American South. His paintings and photographs are held in private, public, and corporate collections around the Southeastern United States and beyond. He served as a curator at the Columbus Museum from 1977 to 1993. Some of his recent professional activities include serving as a consultant for Kohler Foundation on the restoration of the visionary art site, Pasaquan; creating exhibits for the Gertrude “Ma” Rainey House and Blues Museum in Columbus, GA; serving as collections consultant for The Carter Family Memorial Music Center (Carter Family Fold) in Hiltons, VA; and curating ex-hibits for the Alabama Humanities Foundation on the Roots Music of Alabama. In 2004 he was awarded the Presidential Award for Heritage Tourism for his book Blue Ridge Music Trails. Fussell was a 1991 recipient of the Governor’s Award in the Humanities in Georgia.

Henry M. Jacobs is a photographer, filmmaker, drone pilot and musician. He is also the Middle Chattahoochee Director for Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. Henry is a 2018 Hambidge Fellow and his photography can be found in the permanent collection of the Lamar Dodd Art Center at LaGrange College. In 2020, he was included on Georgia Trend Magazine’s Georgia 40 Under 40 list.
